Had a great night last night at Cobb’s, where we caught the great Scott Thompson and the adorable Kevin McDonald, aka 2/5 of Kids in the Hall. Even fractional, these two put on a helluva hilarious show.
Early in the show, Thompson rightly acknowledged that the audience was happy just to see him and would have a good time no matter how funny was, or wasn’t But his mirthful rants on everything from peanut allergies to penises rose above the nostalgia tour possibilities and lifted the big-for-a-Thursday-night crowd into fits of laughter.
Obviously buoyed by beating cancer last year, Thompson’s fearlessness was palpable and exhilarating to watch. I’ve been listening to his entertaining podcast for months and wasn’t surprised by his ability to go it alone with just a mic and some notes. But he really killed. The only drawback was that despite the presence of a stool onstage and the proximity to martini glasses in the full bar, Buddy Cole did not make an appearance.
Weaving himself throughout the show was standup novice McDonald. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a man who excelled at running with absurd moments in sketchery (“Citizen Kane! Citizen Kane!) might have a tougher time alone. But his ur standup routine was endearing, and his songs — especially the second one, which contained the most dead-on passive-aggressive lyrics committed to music — were blissfully funny.
